DESCRIPTION: Thai Ceremonial Drum, of cast brass with high copper content, cast with geometric linear decorations, a star in the center and the perimeter with 4 stylized frogs, each side with two hoops for easier carrying, over 30 years of age for sure. so our guess is mid 20th century.
CONDITION: 17th and 18th century versions of such a drum fetch several thousand dollars. The consignor acquired this drum in Thailand personally on his trip around 1980. We find several web-sites offering New faithful reproductions, made with original methods, and selling for 1500 to 2000 dollars. The salesman who sold our man the drum explained that a person who owned one of these 'Dong Son', was considered richer than a man who owned an elephant. With the drum he could communicate with the Gods and appeal for abundant rain. We find this to be a faithful copy of original designs exhibited in several Asian Art museums. And IF it happens to be older, you win. Cast in several pieces and brazed together. A few dings commensurate with age, overall excellent. Diameter = 24", Ht = 18"
ESTIMATE: $1000 - $1500
PRICE SOLD: $1600
